“Alien” Gets a Reboot

Variety is reporting that those nasty “Aliens” that have been terrorizing the universe since Ridley Scott introduced them back in 1979 are back for a reboot of the film franchise following two tepid “Aliens Vs. Predators” films that sent the entire series off the rails. The good news is that genius filmmaker Ridley Scott is back on board to direct the “pre-quel”. As this will preceed the story told in Scott’s incomparable first act ALIEN, hopes here are that this film will stay true to the original’s tone and feel.

The original “haunted house in space” story told the tale of the crew of a commerical towing spaceship returning to Earth who are awakened and sent to respond to a distress signal from a nearby planetoid.  The crew discovers too late that the signal generated by an empty ship was meant to warn them. That’s when we learned that things can do more than go “bump” in the eternal night of space, and that “in space, no one can hear you scream.” A sentiment that echoes lines from the classic Shirley Jackson novel The Haunting of Hill House .

…there won’t be anyone around if you need help…We couldn’t even hear you, in the night…No one could…In the night…In the dark…

Ridley Scott back on Aliens? This could be really good.
I like the idea of a prequel. The possibilities are endless. Maybe Sigourney Weaver could play Ripley’s mom. It would be great to see her back!
